Black Mold-The Silent Attacker

mildewed wood - roof moldBlack mold, scientifically known as Stachybotrys Chartarum, is a fungus that thrives on cellulose-based hosts, like building materials.  Black mold is generally cause by a poorly ventilated attic or a leak in the roof where the water is permitted to sit.  In some cases, the problem goes un-noticed until inhabitants of the home begin to have adverse impacts on their health.  Once in direct contact with the mold and spores, the symptoms are not unlike a severe flu virus.  People with allergies or medical conditions have been known to fall extremely ill and even die.

Once the mold has taken over, it is difficult and quite costly to remove it.  In some cases, the cost of replacing a home’s structure is greater than building a new home.  Black mold is difficult to spot, as the mold is not always visible to the naked eye.  Once it has begun to spread, it is nearly impossible to stop.  In addition to destroying the structure of your home, it also contaminates everything in it, causing families to leave with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Professional roofing contractors are familiar with this despicable growth and know what to look for and how to prevent it.  In this case, the best defence is prevention.  It is wise to have a professional roofing company inspect your home on a regular basis.  Though it may seem like an unnecessary expense, the benefit of doing this far outweighs the cost of finding a new home or paying for the renovations needed to make your home safe.
